The Institute for Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery and Department of Plastic Surgery has always done things in style! Plastic Surgery Day ( July 15 ) was no different. It was a happening day at our Department. It was not doing things doing free that was important. It was the passion and dedication with which anything was done.
It started with a bang with a successful bilateral hand replant. A young man who had both hands amputated at the wrist level in a book cutting machine at Chidambaram, was rushed to Stanley Hospital.
The replant procedure was done by two teams consisting of surgeons, staff nurses and theatre assistants.
As this procedure was going on, routine work was also in progress at the Department. To show you what our routine was, we give the particulars of the census on July 15 2011.OUTPATIENT CLINIC

After the routine work was over there was an awareness programme for the fresh batch of house surgeons at Stanley Hospital on Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Hand and Microsurgery
Following this programme and discussion, there was a guided tour of the Plastic surgery, Hand surgery and Microsurgical skills lab, and a demonstration on how to develop skills for plastic surgery. This was well received by the fresh graduate students.
The commemoration of Plastic Surgery day was not over. The next day - July 16, 2011, a hand transplant awareness programme was conducted for transplant coordinators, NGOs dealing with donors and patients. This was also an interesting session with a lot of interaction and new ideas coming up.
Thus Plastic and Reconstructive surgery Day was well celebrated at one of the pioneering Departments in the State. This was not surprising, considering that this Department is the precursor of some of the celebrated Plastic Surgeons in Tamilnadu. This has been possible because of the dedicated work put in by all the staff and students.
